Katie with some of her new friends on a day out with the summer camp
There is actually one more week of summer camp but as we are moving to Oaxaca this weekend Katie will be missing it, so for her last week was her last week. Unfortunately she will be missing the end of camp show next week and won’t be able to appear in it but I am sure in a city as large as Oaxaca that there will be other summer camps that will still be running for another week or two that I can enroll her in.
The summer camp here has been amazing find for us, Katie has had a wonderful time and as already mentioned in this blog it has been the first time for her since leaving England when she has been able to regularly interact with other children.
On Wednesday all the children had their faces painted and then on Thursday they all went in fancy dress, Katie was a Disney Princess and even the staff got in on the act. Lette, the wonderful manageress, who was so concerned and helpful when we were searching for a new place to live, was a clown complete with a striped fuzzy wig.
The entire camp goes on a big day out every week as well as daily arts and crafts. Katie has come home with a papier-mâché turtle, a wooden tic-tac-toe board, a robot and a piggy bank.
It has been wonderful to see Katie so happy and with so many friends. Despite the total language barrier I’ve never seen her without another child holding her by the hand and looking after her. It amazes me when I see Katie and other children make themselves understood without a shared language. Lette said it has been a pleasure to see how fast she was incorporated into the group of children and how many friends she has.
Katie is by nature a very sociable person, very talkative and engaging, so I wondered how she would get on with other children who she couldn’t really talk to as they don’t speak the same language, but she has been living for that camp and for her it has been one of the biggest highlights of the trip.
It is sad that she has to leave but I am hoping she can join another camp in Oaxaca and I am thinking about staying there until Christmas and putting her into a school for the winter term. I am going to make enquiries once we reach Oaxaca.
