We’ve Arrived in Mexico City!

Oh my gosh! So here we are in Mexico City! Can’t believe it! The flights weren’t too bad, we had to connect in Miami where we ate hotdogs at the Nathan’s outlet there for one last time.

Getting through immigration was a breeze and we were granted 180 days and then made our way to Puerta 6 where we had arranged to meet Lison, the long term couchsurfer of our landlady whose apartment we will be sharing.

We grabbed a taxi to the apartment but then had to wait outside till a locksmith came as the lock had broken earlier in the day, but he arrived after about twenty minutes. Then we were in and the apartment is really nice, simple, modest but clean and comfortable. Ana, our landlady, was supposed to be taking a job in Rome for six months but after scoring a new job here selling medical equipment she is now staying and we will meet her later today when she arrives back from a business trip.

Katie and I started to unpack and then I joined Lison and Arturro, a friend of Anas’, in the living room and we had a few beers and I tried to remember the limited Spanish I learnt seven years ago in Spain. It was really nice, however I was jetlagged and my body couldn’t keep up with what my heart was willing it to do, so I had to bow out and go to bed, though it was 3:45am at this point!

We are just going to take things easy today, Katie is still flat out asleep and it is nearly lunchtime and I feel as groggy as hell! There is a laundry room in the apartment block so I’m going to clean some clothes. This area is great for good street food so I was told by Arturro and Lison, so we’ll go out in a bit and grab some tacos or a burrito and then the Metro station is just three blocks away and we can reach the historico centro in ten minutes. Bonus!

Lison told us about a summer course in art for kids she knows about so we are going to investigate that tomorrow and put Katies’ name down for it.

Katie was in tears when it was time to leave the hostel in Baltimore, she had been helping out in the office and with housekeeping while we were there and was allowed into rooms and offices that guests were prohibited from, she became like an honourary member of staff! She was even invited to the staff barbecue but missed it because of our long day trip to Washington D.C. It was really funny but very heartwarming and cute to see how she held her own and spoke as an equal with the regular staff. She had also become very close with Amy, as had I, and she begged for us to stay another night. We have often stayed paces a little longer than planned but it is one thing when you have a bus to catch, as opposed to booked plane tickets!

She has often got upset at leaving a place, then had a great time at the next place and been sad about leaving there, with the previous destination almost forgotten about. By the time we were on the plane to Mexico City she was glued to her Spanish text book and talking about the next part of our round the world adventure!
