Captain Jack Sparrow & I in Los Angeles

Captain Jack Sparrow & I in Los Angeles

This is one of my favourite photos of one of my favourite days out in L.A. Katie had gone roller-skating with the family we were couchsurfing with and their daughter and I explored Hollywood and downtown L.A.

I met Captain Jack outside the Kodak Theatre just after I had seen Scooby Doo arguing with a guy handing out leaflets as I was waiting to cross the road. In an ultimate lesson in surrealness I was scooped up by Captain Jack who had thrust my camera at a Middle Eastern tourist who he’d told to photograph us. He then tried to pick me up in a different sense later on that day when after the third time of bumping into him he asked me out for a drink when he finished. I decided not to when he ruined the illusion and told me he was bald under his wig.

I passed Marilyn Monroe talking into her mobile phone about special lunch deals and saw another Captain Jack eating lunch (a salad) outside a supermarket and then nearly a whole ships crew worth of Captain Jacks passing the time of day.

The surrealness took another turn which almost had me shaking and fainting into my salad the following day when we were eating lunch and Katie bounced up and down with excitement swearing she’d just seen Robert Downey Jr walk into the restaurant next to the one we were eating in. (We’re both huge fans) I almost gave myself whiplash turning around to get a peep but missed him, or whoever it was, as they’d already gone inside the other restaurant.
